Ruth Bolister joined the orchestra of English National Opera after studying at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music.

When did you join?
In 1997.

Favourite ENO opera?
Der Rosenkavalier.

Best ENO moment?
Opening the Millennium Dome (now known as the o2 Arena) for New Year 2000.

How did you start?
When I was at school, I wanted to play the flute but couldn’t get a note out of it, so I was given an oboe to try instead.

Passion outside of opera?
Playing golf and supporting Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Career Highlights

She is also a Professor of Oboe at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

During her time at ENO Ruth has played as guest principal oboe of many leading UK orchestras and in 2003 she released a CD of English Oboe Concertos for ASV.

Recently she appeared on camera in the feature film “Me Before You” playing the Mozart Oboe Concerto.
