ENO Orchestra: Glen Sheldon

Glen Sheldon

Violin

When did you join?
In 2000.

Favourite ENO opera?
Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk – two different productions conducted by Mark Wigglesworth – was shattering, using every part of the company to the full and thrilling to play. The second act of Handel’s Jephtha is one of the most moving things I’ve seen on the Coliseum stage.

Best ENO moment?
Act III of Wagner’s The Valkyrie 3 at Glastonbury and Peter Grimes at the Proms – both pretty extraordinary in very different ways for atmosphere.

How did you start?
Good quality, free individual violin lessons at school. Everyone should have access to this if they want it!

Passion outside of opera?
Theatre, art galleries and Portugal.
