American born soprano Nicole Chevalier is making her debut at the Festival d’Aix in July 2022 as Elettra in a new production of Mozart‘s Idomeneo. At the Salzburg Festival she made her international breakthrough in this role in 2019 with Teodor Currentzis and Peter Sellars. Recently she debuted in London‘s Royal Oper House Covent Garden as Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito as well as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, followed by her house debut at Staatsoper Berlin also as Donna Elvira.

The 2022-23 season sees her debuting the role of Agathe in Christoph Marthaler’s new staging of Weber’s Freischütz, Hans Abrahamsen’s orchestrated song cycle Let me tell you with Titus Engel as well as Michael Schönwandt, Hoffmann’s Four Female Leads, a staged one-woman-show version of Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, and Despina in Dmitri Cherniakov’s new production of Così fan tutte. Her debut as Eva in a new Meistersinger with Laurent Pelly is scheduled for 2024.

 

Career Highlights

International highlights include Violetta in La Traviata with Jérémie Rhorer at Musikfest Bremen, Leonore in Fidelio (1806) under the direction of Christoph Waltz and Thaïs with Peter Konwitschny at Theater an der Wien, Elettra with Thomas Hengelbrock at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, La Traviata directed by Benedikt von Peter, the title roles of Offenbach‘s La Belle Hélène, Handel’s Semele, Aribert Reimann’s Medea at Komische Oper Berlin, the Four Female Leads in Barrie Kosky’s production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, roles she also sings in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s staging at La Monnaie Brussels.

Nicole Chevalier’s interpretations of Thaïs and Leonore are available on dvd. Deutsche Grammophon will soon release Mozart’s “Alcandro Io confesso” recorded with the Freiburger Barockorchester. Her production at Staatsoper Hamburg in Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with Kent Negano was recorded in 2020 for the Berlin Biennale. She received the Theatre Award “Der Faust” as Best Performing Artist in Germany in 2017.
