Stephen Jeffreys, who died in 2018, was best known as a playwright. He first came to prominence at the National Student Drama Festival with Like Dolls or Angels.

Career Highlights

Credits include: The Libertine, I Just Stopped By To See The Man (Royal Court Theatre); Valued Friends, A Going Concern (Hampstead Theatre); Bugles at the Gates of Jalalabad (Tricycle Theatre); The Convicts’ Opera (Out of Joint); Lost Land (starring John Malkovich, Steppenwolf, Chicago); The Art of War (Sydney Theatre Company); A Jovial Crew (RSC). His adaptation of Dickens’s Hard Times has been performed all over the world. He wrote the films The Libertine (starring Johnny Depp) and Diana (starring Naomi Watts), and edited Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist for the Royal Shakespeare Company. For eleven years he was Literary Associate at the Royal Court Theatre,  where he was subsequently a member of the Council. His celebrated playwriting workshops influenced numerous writers.
