Andrew Porter was a music critic and translator. Born in South Africa he studied at University College, Oxford, in the late 1940s, prior to commencing a 60-year career as a music critic. He wrote for various London newspapers, including The Times and the Daily Telegraph, and served as principal critic of the Financial Times from 1953 to 1972.

He was music critic of The New Yorker from 1972 until 1992, before returning to London where he wrote for the Observer, Opera, and the TLS. His translations of opera libretti include The Ring of the Nibelung for ENO. As a scholar, Porter notably discovered excised portions of Verdi’s Don Carlos in the library of the Paris Opera, which led to the restoration of the original version of the work. He died in 2015.
