Recent engagements: Das Rheingold, Fidelio, Der fliegende Holländer and Tristan und Isolde, for which he won the coveted Green Room Award for best conductor (Melbourne Opera).
For Longborough Festival Opera, where he is Music Director, a new Ring cycle to be completed in 2024, began in 2019 with Das Rheingold, and continued in 2021 with Die Walküre, semi-staged and with reduced orchestra.
Over many years at LFO, he has established himself as one of the most perceptive and original conductors of the Wagner repertoire, culminating in the highly acclaimed Ring cycles in 2013, directed by Alan Privett, followed by Tannhäuser (Privett), Tristan und Isolde (Carmen Jakobi), Der fliegende Holländer (Tom Guthrie), as well as Die Zauberflöte and Ariadne auf Naxos.
Guest appearances include visits to Lübeck for Parsifal, Holländer, and a concert of American music; to Glyndebourne for Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; to Wellington Festival for Parsifal with the NZSO; all-Beethoven concerts with the Georges Enescu Orchestra, Bucharest, as well as concerts with the Longborough Festival Orchestra, the English Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Swan.
Career Highlights
Between 1976 and 2012 he was a member of the music staff of WNO, where, as an assistant conductor, he worked with the legendary Reginald Goodall (Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal, Die Walküre), Sir Richard Armstrong, Sir Charles Mackerras, Carlo Rizzi, Mark Wigglesworth and Vladimir Jurowski; and especially with Pierre Boulez on Pelléas et Mélisande. He conducted more than 150 performances of a wide repertoire for WNO.
