Michael Bauer was born in Munich. He joined Bavarian State Opera as a trainee in 1980 and has been Head Lighting Designer there since 1998.

Career Highlights
With Bavarian State Opera he has worked with directors including David Alden, Calixto Bieito, Luc Bondy, David Bösch, August Everding, Claus Guth, Richard Jones, Yannis Kokkos, Peter Konwitschny, Jürgen Rose and Roland Schwab, on productions including Die Zauberflöte, L’elisir d’amore, Norma, Guillaume Tell, La Juive, Der fliegende Holländer, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Nabucco, Les Vêpres siciliennes, Don Carlos, Mefistofele, Tosca, La fanciulla del West, Boris Godunov, The Bartered Bride, Werther, Hänsel und Gretel, Arabella and Die Fledermaus.
Away from Munich, he has lit for the Paris Opéra, Berlin State Opera, Theater an der Wien, Semperoper Dresden, La Fenice, La Scala, , Grand Théâtre de Genève, Ultima Contemporary Music Festival, Oslo, Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, Norwegian National Opera, Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, Opera Vlaanderen and Opéra de Lyon and the ROH among others.
